The International Monetary Fund's July 2026 World Economic Outlook Update projected global growth of 3.0 percent for 2026 and 3.4 percent for 2027. Taken together, the two-year path was broadly unchanged from the Fund's April assessment, even as the balance of forces underneath the headline shifted.
The update described an economy moving through the crosscurrents of war and technology. Geopolitical conflict continued to threaten energy supply, trade routes and confidence, while investment linked to artificial intelligence and other technologies supported activity in parts of the global economy.
The combination matters because the gains and losses are distributed unevenly. Economies exposed to imported energy costs or fragile financing conditions face a different outlook from countries receiving large technology investment or benefiting from stronger domestic demand.
The July figures are forecasts rather than guarantees. They depend on assumptions about the duration of conflicts, financial conditions, trade policy and the pace at which technology investment translates into productivity. The update therefore serves as a reference point for policy decisions, not a declaration that uncertainty has passed.
